I am considering moving to one of the mountaineous states -my first choices were Washington, Oregon and Montana, but I am more and more inclined towards Idaho! Great place! I've seen on your site where some folks, mostly anonymously, like to diss Californians. So, Ithought I'd take time off from my trans Sierra mail runs to see what Idaho has to offer. Yesterday I got up along the Big Lost River to visit Garden Creek Point el 8700', which can be seen up and down the Trail Creek Road. Your Idaho weather and scenery are fine but the snow was downright horrible. As an example, the light windcrust over unconsolidated granular wouldn't support anything. My lurk sank deep down whenever I needed it for support. On the uphill my webs would also sink down, down and get tangled in the sagebrush. Taking a regular stride was impossible and finally had to resort to an "excavation two-step" to make any progress. The reward finally came with a front row seat to Idaho's high peaks in mid winter. Also, this peak with its 760' prominence may not have been previously climbed. I relize this last comment will torque some, and others will not give a hoot, so let's just say that with lots of other big fish to fry, Garden Creek Point is one of those overlooked summits. To offset tired muscles the day ended with a fantastic alpenglow. Borah Peak received the last light of day, its snowy crown radiated pink while everything else was in soft purple shadow. The elk herd of Bartlett Point didn't seem to pay this any attention. Still, I can't wait to get back to my Sierra cement, but like the big Caleefornian with the Idaho connection says "I'll bee bahk".

As the 200th anniversary of the Corps of Discovery's passage through Idaho approaches, people have wondered what my thoughts were as I crested Lemhi Pass on Aug 12, 1805. Looking west to the Lemhi Range I spotted this neat pine crowned mountain rising 3400' out of Lemhi Valley. I said to myself " I gotta bag that sucker someday". We named it CAMEAHWAIT PEAK in honor of the Shoshone chief-Sacajawea's brother-who provided us with horses to pass through the Idaho mountains. At an elevation of 8241' Cameahwait Peak has a commanding relief of 1200', measured from highest saddle to summit. For comparison, range highpoints Diamond Peak and Bell Mountain have a highest saddle to summit rise of 1217' and 1350' respectively. I have this on good authority: pick a bright balmy March day and hike to the top and back in half a day. You won't get your mockersons wet, not even muddy. Soon the yellow bells will be in bloom.

Hello, my name is Captain Joseph Duncan, Jr (dec. US Army, 10th Mountain Division). Thank you for naming a great Idaho mountain for me, but I must correct a long standing error. My name is Joseph, or Junior- but NOT Jonathan. My hometown is Estes Park, Colorado, where in 1934 I won the US National Downhill Ski Championship at age 22. The race was held on The Suicide Trail. From 1938-1942 I lived in Sun Valley, Idaho, where I was one of Friedl Pfeifer's ski instructors; and later managed one of the SV lodges. I met and married my wife Audrey at this time. I was commanding a Company of the 87th Mountain Infantry when I was killed by a Nazi artillery shell, April 17,1945, in the Apennine Mountains of Italy. My earthly remains are at the American Cemetary, Florence, Italy; but my spirit is on an 11755' summit in central Idaho.

Run run as fast as you can, you can't catch me I'm the gingerbread man.....and I've gotten to the top of FREDS MOUNTAIN el 9880' just about 5,000 times. Situated fairly and squarely in Wyoming, Freddys should also be an honorary Idaho summit. First, it's located on the'Idahoside' of the Teton Range. And, from 1863-1873, for all anyone knew, this section was part of Idaho Territory. Purists may claim my route up is technical because I use a mechanical ascender with a cable and pulley device....snip, snap, the fox ate the gingerbread man all up. Yum! End of story.

Ah, Kelly Mountain playground! The fresh winter snow reminds me of the competition for the MOST VERTICAL DESCENT OF AN IDAHO MOUNTAIN IN 24 HOURS, aka Kelly Canyon First (and last) Annual St. Valentine's Day Massacre. Hosted by the Kelly Canyon Ski Resort Feb 14-15,1992, Lift#1 and Bear Run were kept open 8am-8am for competitors to ski as many runs as possible in the allotted 24 hours. My strategy was to stay relaxed using Super G turns on a variety of runs along with periodic rests and catnaps. Soon it became apparent the front runners weren't resting...and weren't turning their skis either. Life turned into one big schuss down the lift line....a mindless blur of slam-bam-thank you ma'am figure 11 runs. The winner, Joel Milloway, logged over 145,000 vertical feet.I came in fourth,achieving my goal and a personal best of just over 100M vertical feet.Actually, I came in first in the Over 30 age class, but they forgot to give me an award(the story of my life).Two of the leaders have since passed away, and I sometimes think 'what if I hadn't rested, I could have done better'. Not long ago I skied 60'M vertical in 7 hours using Grand Targhee's high speed lift (maybe Wyoming snow is faster?). It's now doubtful anyone will ever keep their lift open 24 hours straight, so I guess I'll never get another crack at the record.

Can you or your panel of experts tell me the IDAHO MOUNTAIN CLIMBED THE MOST TIMES BY ONE PERSON? The other day I met a dude in a kazoo hat that said he was closing in on 100 ascents of Kelly Mountain el 6805'(the one that contains the Jefferson CoHP). Certainly there must be a guide or fire lookout who has a more intimate relationship with one Idaho summit. A noteworthy achievement in Oregon is Elijah Coalman's 586 ascents of Mt Hood. A probable record in this category is the feat of the Austrian Steinmeier twins who climbed the Dachstein 1400 times. Personally, I feel that unless you're showing friends around or you're tryin to make a buck, this is a pretty anal-compulsive way to enjoy the great outdoors. Happy New Year!

For Thanksgiving 2004 I'd like to offer a prayer of thanks for the seemingly unendless Idaho mountains and all the good that they can offer. In particular I'm thankful today for SULPHUR PEAK 8302'. In the past, a guidebook has stated "an ascent of the peak is not recommended", presumably for the proximity of active mining. I'm happy to report virtually no effects of mineral extraction were observed. This mountain has suffered a bum rap and should now stand proud among the panoply of Idaho's small to mid-size peaks. To date, this section of southeast Idaho has a snowpack at 112% of normal. The white stuff is crusty-perfect for cross country snowshoe travel over otherwise tedious sage, deer brush, and aspen groves. The tri-state view from the summit is sublime. To the north is Grand Teton, while the view to the south takes in Bear Lake and the perma cumulus of the High Uinta. On this note, I will click on my skis for the winter and wish all of you peace and happiness.

Hi Dan-what a fine website for us mountain athletes. It does you proud. Like cohp did, I think you need to expand your list of superlatives. How about IDAHO'S SMALLEST MOUNTAIN and FASTEST TIME(on foot, base to summit). Just outside Franklin,Idaho's oldest town,founded 1860, is LITTLE MOUNTAIN, Idaho's smallest officially named mountain. While the summit elevation of 5228' might seem high to some, the base of 4510+ is also quite lofty. In the old days it was called Mount Smart but this name was deemed unwise once the true status of the mountain became better known. I am the proud owner of the fastest time on Little Mountain of UNDER 10 MINUTES. In fact this is the fastest base to summit time of ANY mountain in Idaho, period!! The Little Mountain Climbing Club has honored me by placing an engraved plaque with my name and time on the summit for all of Cache Valley to see. I set the speed record in 1993 and just to prove it was no fluke, repeated the feat in 1994. I am a charter member of the UNDER 10 MINUTE CLUB. DW.

I saw a picture of Rexburg, Idaho, on your message board and I also saw the entry from another lady outdoors enthusiast. This has given me the courage to make a guestbook entry about the Menan Butte. This is the volcano with the big letter "R" seen from Rexburg. Menan Butte is my personal training mountain. I like to power walk up the 800' on the west side, then run around the caldera rim. It usually takes me 80 minutes. The Butte overlooks the confluence of the Henrys Fork and South Fork Snake River. Below stretches a cottonwood forest, one of the largest in the west. In late fall when bracing mists fill the air, the piercing bugles from the nearby elk ranch is ,well, spiritual. For many children this is their first Idaho summit. We brought both of our girls up here many years ago when they were pre-schoolers. I will understand if you have to delete my entry to make space for other more important mountains and adventures, but thank you anyway.

The Black Pine Mountains on the Great Basin-Columbia Divide looks like a sky island, rising almost 5000' from its base. The subject of this idahosummits guestbook entry is CLOUDS. While the valleys have been gray and dreary with low hanging stratus, go up a few thousand feet and these same clouds are a white blanket lapping at your feet. Yesterday GUNNELL PEAK 8316' was quite breezy, funnelling in a lenticular cloud band off the Great Salt Lake. On the summit all was coated in a frost feathered rime. From a wall of white the whipped clouds thinned to reveal phantom shapes, then seconds later opened up to a clear blue sky. Black Pine Peak stood out-white and pineless. This process reversed and repeated itself several times for the spellbound viewer. Only the frigid wind trying to claim my parka made me retreat. November hikes in Idaho are tops for weather lovers.

Almost forgot. Add to the Mount Borah honor roll for 1932- Earl M Buckingham,USGS. He had with him these beautiful gold,actually brass, benchmark tablets. Once set in rock, he said, they should last over a thousand years. I said people'd steal 'em long before that. Anyhow, it was the Depression and shortly thereafter I believe the survey men began using a plainer bronze benchmark.

Thanks to the wonders of the computer and the new internet hookup here at the Mt McCaleb Cemetary I'm able to go online from my coffin. Before retiring and moving into town to run the Texaco filling station, Mayme and I had a cattle ranch at the foot of the highest idahosummit. Heck, until 1935 we didn't even know this mountain we called Beauty was the highest in the state. I think you young bucks should know who the pioneers were on Mount Borah. Most of these guys checked in at my ranch for directions before going on up.For the most part they were cowboys, college men,miners, tourists, and surveyors. As far as I can remember, here's the honor roll: 1914- Tom Bannon, Jessup MD and USGS party(they even used my red ranch home at Dickey as a triangulation station. Cheers from Challis! Yesterday, got Corkscrew Mtn 9348', seven miles west of here. Snowline is now at 5500'. Above 8600' it's 2 feet deep and needed cleated snowshoes for the variable consistency of the snowpack. For winter you'll probably have best luck using Forest Road 79 out of Challis Creek and aiming for Corkscrew's northeast slope. The mountain lives up to its name-all approaches involve zig zags. Did you see the Northern Lights last night? The 8 hours of silent fireworks began shortly after sunset with an infrared ball causing the white mountains to glow. Later, a greenish white mass of light spread throughout half the sky-like a fog bank rolling over nighttime San Francisco. The finale was a series of spotlight beams along with classical pulsating waves. Wow, frozen Idaho rocks!

Some people just can't let hiking season die a natural death. You guys should visit Idaho's sunny south, Cassia County. Our mountains have dry approaches and scenic snowcaps. Middle Mountain makes a fine half day November outing. It has only ankle deep snow on top. What I like about this 8457' Idaho summit is that you can see the route of the California Trail thru 3 states-from Idaho's Raft River Valley all the way to the East Humboldt Range in Nevada. Many homes in this area have foundations and chimneys built from flagstone quarried on Middle Mountain. You could say a bit of Middle Mountain is in our hearths.

Greetings from cattle country in the southeast highlands of Idaho. If you don't mind getting caked in mud there are lots of fine little mountains to play on in these parts. For instance, the 6" snowcover made for a nice quiet snowshoe walk to Pine Mountain South elev 7156'. You can see lots of idahosummits from here, but don't wait too long 'cause the snowmachiners'll be revvin' soon.PS/the Bone Store is now open.

Mon Nov1,2004. Once again, as they say, The Pass Kicks Ass. Today's peak, ELLY MOUNTAIN el 9279', is 1.5 mi south of Teton Pass, Snake River Range, Wyoming, at headwaters of Teton River. Conditions: single digit temp, 36" dry crystalline snow, brilliant white, under a bluebird sky. Amazingly, Edelweiss Bowl was already tracked out. Was able to find an untracked shot of champagne powder in Thanksgiving Bowl. A hero day for mountain surfing.

The original argument may have been whether to log the surrounding lodgepole forest. Guess who won that one? Today's argument was trying to decide whether or not this was a winter ascent. With 18" of freshies and neglecting to bring snowshoes, the argument got pretty heated. The issue wasn't resolved until the snow encrusted 6' cairn came into view, at which point the argument became moot. Life is good.

Several queries to this site ask who, how, why did a peak get named? Some folks earn Masters and Doctorates trying to answer this type of question. One early Geographer who tried to create order out of chaos was Henry Gannett (1846-1914), early Chairman of the US Board on Geographic Names. As it relates to Idaho see his publication "A Dictionary of Altitudes" USGS Bulletin 160, 1899.Naming geographic features is often a contentious subject as witness by the battle to name a suitable mountain for Dr Gannett.After 13 years of quibbling the high point of Wyoming was chosen to honor him. But just for fun let's pick an area-Sun Valley, Idaho-since it's known by many. The 1895 USGS Hailey and Sawtooth 30 minute quads constructed by Topographical Engineers Wm Griswold and Edmund Perkins show very few peak names. To them we can attribute Glassford, Ryan, The Devils Bedstead(11051'), Hyndman, Boulder, Easly(Easley),Galena. Andy Hennig's 1948 Ski Guide popularized recreation in the Pioneer/Boulder/Smoky high country. To him we can attribute these peak names: Devils Bedstead(11865'), Salzburger Spitzl,Goat, Duncan,Ted Handwerk, Florian Nudl,Cobb, Durrance, Bromaghin, Silver(which many now call Saviers Peak).Some of these names honor fellow Tenth Mountain Division comrades killed in action during WWII. Back in the early 1900's a precedent was set when there was a conservation movement in the US to create alpine National Parks. Geographers were urged to create as many place names as possible.Yellowstone, Teton, Yosemite, Rocky Mountain, etc are crammed with named peaks. Name it and they will come.

An earlier visitor to this site requested information on a peak named for his brother Jim Otteson, Sun Valley ski patrolman & heli guide killed in an avalanche, Smoky Mtns, Feb 1996. OTTO'S PEAK el 10458' in the Boulder Mtns ia aka Rock Roll Peak. Two other Boulder Mtns peaks named for local ski pioneers are visible from Sun Valley. DURRANCE MOUNTAIN el 10414' honors Dick Durrance(1915-2004) who twice won the Harriman Cup ski race on this mountain in the late 1930's.It has also been called Basils Peak. HENNIG PEAK el 10680' is that nice cone shaped summit left of Kent & Ryan as seen from Ketchum. Andy Henig was an early ski guide who lead outings to the surrounding peaks in the 1940's. He named several of the prominent peaks in the area. In this same section of the proposed Hemmingway Wilderness I'd also suggest a peak be named for Martyn Mallory(1880-1936), a local, known as the Ansel Adams of Idaho for his stunning area photographs. MALLORY PEAK el 10589', on the Boulder crest, overlooks one of Idaho's classic rock glaciers and is just visible from Hwy 75 at the Boulder Basin Road.

Here's a note for Idaho mountain loving peak baggers. I have finally completed the Thousand Peaks. The 1000 mountain ascents, all different-no duplicates, reflect part of a life journey begun in 1968. I believe I am the first Idahoan to achieve this goal. Categories of interest are as follows: 649 Idaho summits done 107 Idaho summits over 11000' 75 peaks, mostly in east central Idaho, with no prior record of summit occupation 546 summits reached over 10000' 2004 was a good year in the mountains with 95 summits(and counting) and 1.3 million vertical feet skiied, both yearly personal bests. So, onward toward the next thousand. Hope to see your name in the summit register. 9/29/04

A group of five of us finished (Sunday) a Borah hike. Weather was perfect hiking conditions all day through cloudless skies and cool morning temperatures. Trail head time was 7am, and summit times were 4 hours & 5 hours (two seperate groups). One person jogged down in 115 minutes. Everyone else took 3.5 hours. My GPS logged the trip as a total of 8.2 miles. The USGS marker (listing 12,662ft) was not on the summit, but was about 4 feet lower. The register on top (7.69mm army ammo can) was full and contained only a few empty piecies of paper. Several out of country logs were listed including on from Slovenia. I am interested in attempting a May snow climb up the north face and will be looking around for info.

Read your comments about Snowbank Mtn (Valley Co.) in October. Yeah, hunters use forest land, too. But the dust has become a major problem due to multiple (ab)use and extended drought. Try the walk in early July. Glissading off Council Mtn to the east is a trip.

Hello, I was raised in the area called Muldoon, about 30 miles north of Carey, Idaho. My grandfather brought sheep into the Carey, Wood River, Fish Creek areas. I went to grade school in Carey and went to high school in Shoshone. During the summers I worked for the Bureau of land management fight range and timber fires. During this time I got to know the Carey area quite well. I remember in the late 1940, that they would haul sheep from Wood River and Fish Creek to Picabo (where the railroad sheep cars were filled), then they would be send to market. A great site! I was turned on to it when I read the article about Nic Stover and his record setting adventure bagging the 9 12,000 footers in Idaho Magazine. I'm originally from Hailey and in my younger days bagged a few peaks, but the article and this site has got me excited to get back in hiking shape and to try to get a few more each summer. HI, I was stationed at Mtn Home AFB years ago and have always thought of Idaho as my second home. I was at this look out in 1971!! (How can that be??) I was back out in 1987 , visiting friends, and took my wife up to see Trinity Peak and Trinity Lake. It was the first time that she had ever been out west. She loved it. We hope to get back out soon. Kick Butt site my man!!! I lived in Monteview, Jefferson County for about 8 yrs, at the foot of the Lemhi's and Beaverheads!! In july 31,1999 myself and two other buddies climbed Mt. Borah. It was my first climb. We began at 7:oo on the morning reached the summit at quarter til 12:00 and left at 12:30 we reached the pickups at 2:30. Is that a good time. We all felt that we are in pretty good shape. What are some of the other times that you might know of . * an interesting note. I am extremely acrophobic so my ascent was a neat goal to accomplish.

Congratulations on summitting Whitney (& getting the infamous permit). I climbed it in the 70s, from the W.--no problem w/permits. Have only "bagged" (they allowed me to climb them) 13 US HPs but plenty of 2ds (ie Mauna Loa, 2.95 ascents), & many abroad, latest in the Mascarene Islands (see Highpoints Forum). Is that hut on top full of snow? It was when I climbed it. Besides Whitney--slept on top--I've had the pleasure of watching the sun rise from 2 mts., Shasta & Gilman's Point on Kilimanjaro--it was worth the climb. I have climbed Middle Fork Peak in the Yellowjacket Mountains over 100 times. My family and I worked the lookout tower on top its 100+ ft rock pile for many years in the 1980's. My worst experience climbing was when my rope rubbed on a rock and broke. I ended up falling about 235 feet and braking almost every bone in my body. i was in critical condition for 3months. it took me 2 and a half years to make a full recovery. i tried the summit again and ended up breaking my back. i dont dare try again, i cant being paralyzed

Wish I would have found this site prior to my climb. I attempted a summit climb on Mt. Borah on 5-3-02 but was only able to get to Chicken Out Ridge. What a beautiful climb! Required winter climbing gear with exception of snow shoes. I plan on returning to finish the climb! For two days it was just my climbing partner and me on the mountain. Sometime between 1926 and 1932 my mother and dad spent two winters at "Cape Horn" in the Salmon River country of Idaho. I know they packed in by horseback pulling sleds with their year's worth of food because once the snow set in they couldn't leave. My mother's health was poor and it was thought back in those days that the high altitude might help her. My dad ended up a professional photographer and I have lots of pictures of that area from that time. There was a bounty on cougar and that's how he made what money he did make. I have always wondered exactly where on the South Fork "Cape Horn" might be located but have never found it before this. Do feel free to write me if you want to......... I love to share......

Old building on Heinen must have been for a fire lookout??? Any "can't miss" peaks that you have been to in the Idaho City area that I need to get on my list?

Very interesting. My favorite web site for Idaho. I'm an Idaho native and love Idaho as though she were my mother. I work for the U.S. Forest Service and have been to a few of your places. Some on horseback as I'm the rangerider in Idaho City. What do you suppose the old buiding on top of Mt. Heinen was for, lol? Thank you for creating such a nice web site. I hang onto the information supplied as I planned a trip to Mt. Borah. There was a wide range of facts about the mountain but few pertaining to winter/spring climbing conditions. Here is my report: 3/23/02 Getting a late start from Logan, Ut. we reached the access road off of highway 93. Traveled on icy road within 2.5 miles of the trailhead. On foot we hike the forest trail layed down by skiers (never mentioned in any reports). The trail was well defined, steep, and snow was hard enough to walk upon. Some areas the snow were waist deep and slowed progress greatly. Reached treeline and ate lunch, but realized the weather and day light may close in on us. At 2:00 pm we reached what we thought was "chicken out ridge". We were never sure, from all reports, where this ridge was located, since three ridges match the best description of the it. The cloud cover drop forming a driving snow storm. The knowledge that we had at least 4 more hours climbing in these condition caused us to turn for home. The information we felt would have been helpful would pertained to snow and road conditions. Whether one should plan to snowshoe, ski, or hike on foot based on recent reports, that we could not get from the NFS. Finally, we loved every inch, except for the waist deep snow, of the mountain and will return to top it off. Borah is far from "Boring". One should plan for a one and a half to two day winter climb to manage its summit.

Great site man! I think your photos and info on the climbs are a great help for folks like myself, (new climber). One thing that would make this great site even better would be more of your routes drawn on topo maps, like the Mt. Cramer trip. It would help out people in picking the right lines and trails to take to the summits. Thanks, and keep up the great work!

Killer website. I've been wanting to do something like this for a long time as well. I thought my pic's of dozens upon dozens of Idaho peaks were close to the best and your collection ranks very high. I also have climbed many of these peaks but not as many prominent peaks that you have. Quite an accomplishment. My home region is McCall, Valley County and the Salmon River Mtn's with the White Clouds a close second. The trophy of course is Castle Peak and I've nearly summited the peak twice but turned back once due to weather and lthe last time because of a winey climbing partner(girlfriend).
