For the 2014 Fall Outing, I wanted to change things up a bit and plan a mountain that had a trail. There was some selfish intent, as I wanted to be able to bring my wife along, but I also knew others could take advantage and bring along their parents, spouses, and kids.

The logical choice was a fire lookout, aptly named Lookout Mountain, in the White Clouds. It provided a nice trail to the top and our choice of nice campgrounds near the trailhead.

I had selected the weekend prior for the outing, but a soaking rain storm was predicted and I postponed a week. It was a great choice, as the day of the trip was predicted to be incredible, with blue skies, mild temps, and light winds. Not bad for any day of the year, but even better for October.

My wife and I arrived in the afternoon on Friday to setup camp. Unfortunately, we found the campground I had told everyone to meet us at was closed. We drove another mile and found the Casino Creek campground open. After setting up camp, we were going to head to Stanley to inform everyone, but I found a 10x10 foot area near our campsite where I had cell phone reception. This was enough to get out a message to a few people, which told a few other people... and eventually everyone was alerted via the web or social media of the campground change.

Steve was the first to arrive and started setting up to cook for the group. Nothing like having your meal prepared by a world famous chef with a book!

People started arriving at regular intervals and soon everyone was enjoying the fire, drinks, and a spectacular dinner (thanks Steve!).

We had a great time sharing stories around the fire. Slowly people trickled off to their tents or trailers.

We arose to a cold morning. This didn't dampen spirits though as we readied around the fire and then made the 8 mile drive to Rough Creek road and the trailhead for Lookout Mountain.

After organizing gear and a group photo, we finally hit the trail with 26 humans and 5 dogs. Despite the big group, we made good progress. The trail is in excellent shape and people could comfortably socialize while hiking. We strung out into groups and had some great conversation.

Eventually we got to where we could see the peak finally. After a few left turns at trail junctions, we were on the last leg of the trip. Soon we were arriving in small groups at the summit, where the sun was out the views were happening! From the summit, you take in an amazing view of the Lost Rivers, White Clouds, Sawtooths, Tango peaks, and Salmon River ranges.

It was great exploring the lookout, chatting with everyone, identifying peaks, and just plain old relaxing. It was indeed the perfect locale for such a group.

Eventually we started down, with people breaking into groups of varying paces. Once back at the trailhead, we sat in the shade near a small creek enjoying more conversation and rehydrating.

It was a great fall day and great outing. Not only did I reconnect with some great friends, but I was able to introduce my wife to them as well. Then on top of that, I met even more like-minded people that I hope I see again.

Take US 93 east from Stanley. At 9.5 miles from Stanley, turn south onto Rough Creek Road (it immediately crosses the bridge over the Salmon River). Follow this nice gravel road (suitable for sedans) to the trailhead for 4 miles.

From the end of Rough Creek Road, take Rough Creek Trail (FST 647). The trail starts out in trees, with occasional meadow crossings. At about 2.75 miles, it reaches a fork, where you will take a left (it is signed "Lookout Mountain LO 2 miles"). The trail then switchbacks steeply up to a saddle, where again you must take the left fork. The final leg of the trip follows a ridge, then reaches the base of the peak, where several long switchbacks lead you to the summit.

The trail is in great condition most of the way.
