I was en route to hike Squaw Butte north of Emmett. A very timely and lucky discussion with a local while I was looking around at Freezeout Summit just south of Emmett led me to back off plans. Word was that the road to the base of Squaw Butte was still very wet and not a good idea at the time (even down low the gentleman said).

Well, might as well head up Freezeout Hill, which was just a short jaunt from where I was and get a peak today.

Freezeout Hill is pretty tame and covered with radio towers, however, it is a real peak and promised some great views of Emmett and the Payette Valley extending west of Emmett. It certainly did not disappoint and was a decent workout.

The views were great and I actually enjoyed the hike a lot.

There are a maze of fences surrounding the peak. Some are marked as private. Don't fret, you can avoid the fences and private property by staying to the north fence line.

The summit has a fenced in area around the radio tower, but I found a higher location just outside of the fenced area. There is a benchmark to the west of the gate as well.

On the way down, it got fairly cool and windy, but the day remained sunny.

Fun little hike that is only 45 minutes from Boise.

Utilizing Highway 16, make your way to Freezeout Hill summit (approximately 4 miles south of Emmett). Turn left onto the old road and park there (several large turnouts are available).

I started at Freezeout Hill summit, parking along the old Freezeout Hill grade (just off of the Highway 16 going into Emmett). Due to the fence and private property, stay on the north edge of the fence line until it ends, then angle southwest to the summit.
