Trip Report

We were hanging out with friends at their cabin in Crouch again. This time Carrie and I decided to go hike to the top of Scott Mountain on Saturday afternoon.

I was intrigued because Scott Mountain is a prominent peak from the Crouch area. Carrie just wanted to get some hiking in.

We could have driven nearly to the summit, but we wanted to hike, so we pulled off the Scott Mountain road at a small turnout and hiked from there.

We were both impressed with the views and terrain along the road. Despite being on the road for 2 hours, we only saw 1 vehicle. So in my opinion, this is a good way to reach the top of the peak for those not wanting to bushwhack or find the trail coming up from Granite Basin.

The day was cool and breezy, with some haze in the air. It was welcome relief from the heat I'd experienced the previous week on Wolf Mountain.

The lookout was manned and the person in it was napping, so we didn't spend a ton of time and kept pretty quiet.

The hike out was going well, then we came around a corner to see a bear about 50 feet away in the middle of the road. He didn't notice us until I made some noise. He then stood up on a log, looked our way and sniffed; before disappearing into the forests below the road. Very cool encounter... I always enjoy seeing wild animals up close like that.

I would highly recommend this area, with the only caveat being the rough road to get there!

Getting There

From Garden Valley, we drove 15 miles east on the Banks to Lowman Road (Highway 17). We turned left and followed the road up Pine Creek for 10 miles. This road shows as improved on the map, but it is rough and steep, especially early on. There are numerous signs along this road, including signs for the Scott Mountain Lookout Road.

At 10 miles, we turned left on the Scott Mountain road and followed it for 1.5 miles before we parked so we could hike to the lookout. You could drive to within about 1/2 a mile of the lookout before it is gated.

Hiking Directions

From our parking spot along the Scott Mountain road, we hike 2.8 miles following the road to the top of the lookout.
