The view of Pilot Peak from the trail to Sunset Mountain.
Trip Report (March 2001):
I got snowed out of my last trip up Pilot Peak on the snowbound road. Since a lot of snowmobilers use this road, I thought I avoid them by doing it on a weekday (didn't happen). I picked a very warm, clear day. The hike did not take that long and I wished I had brought skis for the descent.

Route:
Drive past Idaho City on Idaho 21 to Mores Summit. Park in the cleared out lot. Cross the highway and follow the road heading west/southwest at first (north/northeast eventually). In about 4.5 miles the road reaches Pilot Peak. I'm not sure if I used the road or not, but I kept thinking I was past the summit, so I shot up the steep hillside along the road and popped out of the trees right below the summit. On the way out I just followed the south ridge down. The descent only took about 45 minutes via that ridge.
