This is a view of Sunset Mountain from the trail to Pilot Peak.
This is the view of the Boise and Trinity Mountains to the east of Sunset Mountain.
Trip Report (December 31st, 2000):
Sunset Mountain is a pretty cool snowshoeing trip on a snowbound road. From the Mores summit parking lot, follow the obvious trail in the snow (unless fresh powder covers it) to the southeast to the rounded summit of Sunset. On top you will find a fire lookout and a great view of the Boise and Trinity Mountains to the east. I've done this trip numerous times and haven't encountered snowmobiles, I think they stay on the Pilot Peak side of Mores summit.

Route:
To get to the Sunset Mountain trailhead, just head out of Boise on Idaho 21 toward Idaho City. About 13 miles past Idaho City you will want to make a right turn to get off the highway and park at the signed and plowed Mores Creek Summit. Follow the snow-bound road that heads southeast toward Sunset Mountain. You’ll need snowshoes or cross-country skis, warm-clothes (this is a good workout, so make sure to layer), and the topo map for that area (the Sunset Mountain quad) so you can follow the road. The outing is about 10 miles round-trip.
