Trip Report (4/26/2002):
Kelly Mountain is a somewhat pointed peak located west of Hailey, Idaho. It's south ridge is frequently snow-free in late-April to early-May each year. Based on that, we chose to climb it in mid-May. Sure enough, it was totally snow-free the entire way. Other than some brisk winds and some haze in the south, it was a perfect day.
On top is a benchmark and rock pile around an old sign. The view from the top of Kelly is spectacular, with big mountains in each direction. I think it is a tie between the Boulders and Pioneers, but both are amazing from the summit. Also, notice the pointed Buttercup Mountain and Soldier Mountains from the summit to your west.
Trip stats:
Time: 3 hours
Length: 3 miles
Elevation Gain: 2,300 feet
Class (difficulty): 2
Directions:
From Hailey, turn west onto Croy Creek road. Follow the road past farms and houses until you reach Kelly Gulch. To here the road you have been on was improved, in the gulch it is lower quality, but still 2-wheel driveable. Follow the road until you like the looks of the ridge to your east and park. We stopped about a mile from the road's end at around 6,500 feet.
Route:
Head east and gain the south ridge. Turn north and climb to the top. While steep, there are no obstacles.
