Steel Mountain is a worthy goal. I climbed it from the west ridge, but climbing it from the east or one of the techinical north ascents are probably more common. On top of Steel you will find an awesome view of mountains in each direction. Greg Parker has left a summit register in an old ammo can. You can also view Anderson Ranch Reservoir from the summit.
Trip stats:
Time: 8 hours (5 up, 3 down)
Length: 5 miles
Elevation Gain: 2,500 feet
Class (difficulty): 2
Drive: Drive to Featherville, Idaho. Take FS-156 north out of Featherville and drive to Rocky Bar (an interesting ghost town). From Rocky Bar, continue on FS-156 east until its junction with FS-129. Continue on FS-156, but just after that junction, the road crosses a saddle. Park here.
Climb: From the saddle, climb through the trees, straight up the west ridge. After a while, the trees will thin and the ridge will narrow. The summit will soon come into view.
Trip #1 Photos:
Drift on one of the ridges leading to the summit. A pretty large avalanche had occured below that drift earlier that year.
False summit on Steel Mountain.

Steel's northern summit.
The summit of Steel Mountain, a mess of twisted wire and broken glass. You will find a summit register amongst the debris.
